Same-Sex Marriage Legal

The Supreme Court ruled that States cannot keep same-sex couples from marrying and must recognize their unions. So...what does this mean?

While our modern society divides gender into two domains – man and woman – many traditional cultures have not always viewed gender in this way. Genders were based on societal and cultural roles. Each individual had a place in society and a way to contribute. Two-spirit people were revered leaders, medicine people, representatives in negotiations, and held special ceremonial roles. This way of seeing the world allowed people to be true to themselves and their feelings. Today, the influences of religion and European values have altered the way many tribes view two-spirit people.

This Supreme Court ruling, President Obama says, "will strengthen all of our communities" by offering dignity and equal status to all same-sex couples and their families. So, for modern society, this ruling paves the way to allow people to be true to themselves and their feelings. Let's learn from one another, educate those who don't understand and support one another. If you are interested in your specific Tribe or culture, you might ask an elder or someone from your Tribe who today identifies as gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, or Two-Spirit.
